Banyan Utilities Private Limited (BUPL) is setting up a 5 MW Natural Gas based cogeneration project at 34 Banyan Place, Jurong Island. Since the proposed project is contributing to the mitigation of global climate change and is of a special kind, the project developer Banyan Utilities Private Limited intends to develop the project as a Clean Development Mechanism project.
The project activity will achieve Green House Gases emission reduction on two fronts:
• By generating power using natural gas thus replacing grid electricity which has a higher carbon emission factor than natural gas
• By generating steam from waste heat recovery and thus offsetting equivalent diesel combustion to produce the same amount of steam
Further, the project will contribute towards meeting the sustainable development objectives of Singapore in the following ways:
• Promotion of lower emissions technologies thereby production of cleaner energy.
• Capacity building and the transfer of technology in greenhouse gas emission reduction technologies to Singapore
• New employment opportunities for elderly people in Singapore.
Thus the project activity contributes to the protection and conservation of the local environment by producing cleaner and greener technologies and mitigating climate change.
